Princeton Corkscrew's Favorite New Pizza Wine
October 24, 2011

I have been searching for a great Montepulciano d'Abruzzo for over a year now; it is not an easy task. While Abruzzo is steeped in ancient Italian traditions, all too often the divide between the old farmer-style winemaking and that which resembles an industrial scale product is far too large. The challenge is finding a satisfactory middle ground-- a terrific value wine. A wine that is inexpensive as well as good, a wine that is affordable by the case, a wine you feel good about drinking and confident serving. The ultimate table wine. And I am thankful to have found such a perfect wine for these cool autumn nights because Gigi has been on strike for almost two months now in the kitchen. Apparently, our sons' seemingly endless soccer games mean pizza, pizza and more pizza for dinner. I have never had so much Montepulciano in my entire life!

Azienda Agricola Costantini Antonio
Costantini is a sixty-hectare estate located in the province of Pescara which is nestled between the Gran Sasso mountains of the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Working with varietals native to Abruzzo, their new enologist Riccard Brighigna uses great skill to create a set of wines that weds old-world character to new-world prices. They also seem to have found an appropriate name for their wine. Febe or "Phoebe" is derived from the Greek Phoebus. Its meaning: "of the sun; luminous, splendid." A great name for a wine of tremendous quality!

FEBE
Febe is 100% Montepulciano. The vineyards have great Southern exposure, and the vines are planted in clay-calcareous soil about 275-350 feet above sea level. Made entirely in stainless steel, this medium-bodied wine shows gorgeous fruits and soft tannins. The nose is full of bright red fruits and violets. Subtle notes of black cherry with a touch of spice meld with a hint of plum on the mid-palate. The wine has a velvety texture, and a vibrant acidity on the finish ensures that the wine maintains its liveliness throughout. An obvious pairing with pizza and just about any meal that's quick and easy to prepare, but this wine also has enough complexity to reach a wider range of cuisines, including classic dishes like maccheroni alla chitarra (guitar pasta), sweet Italian sausages, cured meats and cheese, and pork and lamb with spicy red pepper. |

This is truly a wine for every occasion; Febe will be a welcome addition at everyone's table. Its low alcohol content ensures that it is a wine to guzzle, no cellaring necessary, just a gathering of family and friends...and a lot of pizza!
For this week only, enjoy for $10.80 per bottle or $10.20 on six bottles or more. A great deal for a great Italian wine. Just $122.40 per case! (Regular Price $12)
